Support Women Survivors of War in Southern Sudan

Women for Women International hopes that any action that will bring more suffering to people in conflict throughout the world can be avoided. However, we must be ready for the humanitarian catastrophe that war undoubtedly brings. Women for Women International is currently raising money for our Emergency Response Fund to expand our work with women survivors of war.

In July 2005, a Women for Women International assessment team traveled to Sudan to see what they could do to support women survivors of war there. They were shocked by what they saw.

In Southern Sudan, beyond Darfur, 30 years of civil war have resulted in complete and utter devastation of the country. There is no infrastructure. There is not one house, not one school, not one medical clinic standing. No running water and no electricity. Women are more likely to die giving birth than to finish grade school.

But when women were asked what they needed to rebuild, they said the same thing over and over – water first, then education for themselves and their children. Despite their desperate situation, women have hope for a future that will be better for their children.

After witnessing the destruction, Women for Women International has decided it must act to support the women in Southern Sudan. It will be one of our most challenging programs to establish – we will need to build our offices literally from the ground up, bringing in building supplies, leasing land to build an office, establishing sanitary facilities for our staff.

Any amount you can give will make a difference. Thank you for helping us meet the needs of women in Southern Sudan.
