Mojo Mom
 Every woman has the power to change the world. This idea is at the heart of the new book, Mojo Mom: Nurturing Yourself While Raising a Family, written by long-time Women for Women International sponsor and donor, Amy Tiemann, Ph.D. “Each one of us has gifts, talents, and affinities for different concerns that the world needs us to turn into action,” she writes. “No matter how busy we are, no matter how many children we have, the world simply cannot afford to have us abdicate our positions of leadership for good.”
Tiemann first learned about Women for Women International when she saw President and CEO Zainab Salbi on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2000. The program “touched her heart,” and she felt grateful to find an opportunity to make a difference in the world, even in the midst of her busy life mothering her own toddler. Tiemann is sponsoring her fourth sister in Rwanda; the first three have graduated from the program. Inspired by learning about her sister’s life in Rwanda, she thought, “if a woman in Rwanda can put her country back together, those of us who enjoy the stability and privileges of living in the United States need to step up to make a positive contribution to the global community.”
 After becoming a sponsor, Tiemann searched for ways to deepen her involvement with Women for Women International. She invited Salbi to speak at several venues in her hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. When she heard Salbi tell the story of founding Women for Women International, Tiemann was inspired to feature Salbi in her book.
Mojo Mom begins with advice on how women can nurture themselves as they shape their new identities as mothers and concludes by encouraging women to look beyond their own families and find ways to become leaders. Salbi is one of the leaders that Tiemann features, capturing her life story and views on the leadership roles that ordinary women play around the world. “I was inspired by the idea that women across the world are taking charge of their societies,” Tiemann said. She believes that building one-to-one connections between women making a difference is a perfect activity for a mother. “Part of being a mother is being connected to the larger community of women,” Tiemann explains. “Every mother wants a safe world for her children to grow up in. This idea cuts across cultures, religions and borders.”
Tiemann acknowledges that the crises of the world can be overwhelming, making it hard for an individual woman to imagine what she can do. “My answer to you,” she writes in Mojo Mom, “is that we have the responsibility to open our eyes to problems that affect all of us, and to work actively to make the changes that we can.”
