Question of the Month

The Question of the Month is our newest way to correspond with your sister. The ideas for the questions were submitted by the trainers who work daily with your sisters and have told us what they would like to learn about you.

Our goal is to make letter-writing more accessible. To respond to the Question of the Month, simply hit reply when you receive a Question of the Month email. Remember to include the following in the body of your email:

  • Your full name
  • Your ID number
  • Your sister's full name
  • Your sister's woman group

July 2008: As summer winds down, savor your own summer memories by sharing your favorite summer hobbies or activities with your sister. How do you spend your time during the summer months? Do you go to the beach, hike, or garden? Do you take any special trips with friends and family?

June 2008: Tell your sister how you help make the Earth greener and protect the environment.

May 2008: MORE magazine wants to hear from our sponsors who are 40+ about the power of their relationship with their sponsored “sister”. Has the woman you sponsored changed your life in some way? Has she given you a new perspective? Have you been inspired by the strength of the woman you sponsor and made a drastic change in your life? Please share your story of learning and transformation with us and help to inspire other women to connect with their global community. We would love to hear from you. Please send your story to sponsorship@womenforwomen.org.

April 2008: World Refugee Day is June 20th – a day when we recognize people who have been displaced as a result of conflict or natural disasters. Many women in our program are refugees, or returnees who have come back to their homeland after years of displacement. This year, honor World Refugee Day by sending your sister a letter.

March 2008: Your sister is learning job skills so that she can provide for her family. For many women, this may be the first time they are earning an income. Tell your sister about your first job – was it fun, difficult, boring? What did you learn from it?

February 2008: International Women’s Day is a day that celebrates the core values and ideals of Women for Women International, by honoring the strength and sisterhood of women around the world. If you could create your own holiday that would raise awareness about an issue that is important to you, what would it be? How would you celebrate it?

January 2008: In January Women for Women International was featured on the CBS news program 60 Minutes. As part of their training, women in our program learn how to become active, informed citizens. Tell your sister how you stay informed about your community and the world around you. What current event issues do you feel passionate about?

December 2007: As the New Year approaches, your sister may be celebrating in many different ways. This holiday season, write to your sister to tell her about your New Year’s traditions.

November 2007: This holiday season, your sister has something to be thankful for. Your sponsorship funds are helping her build a better future for herself and her family. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, tell your sister what special things in your life make you thankful.

October 2007: With the fall season upon us, tell your sister what autumn is like where you live. What is the weather like? What special holidays or traditions do you celebrate with your friends and family? What types of food do you eat during this time of year?

September 2007: It may be hard for your sister to believe that even though you have never met and live far away, you want to help her and you care about her. Tell your sister what motivated you to become a sponsor. Is there someone who helped you in a time of need?

August 2007: Literacy is something that may be very new to your sister. She is becoming stronger by learning to read and write. Soon she will be able to harness that power to make decisions that will impact her children, community and her country. This month, write to your sister and tell her about how a book or story you read made an impact on your life. What valuable lesson did you take away from the story? What insights did you gain about yourself or the world?

July 2007: Women in our program receive support and empowerment from your letters. What is something that gives you encouragement? Is it a family member or friend, or is it an object, memory or activity? Tell your sister about anything that provides you with support and encouragement and why.

June 2007: As we just celebrated Father's Day, it is important to recognize that men can play an essential role in gaining women’s rights. Many of our program participants have asked us to engage their male family members – husbands, fathers and brothers, in the training process. Are there men in your life or family that have been supportive of you? How do you think we can get men to become active advocates for women’s rights?

May 2007: Summer is on its way! Tell your sister your favorite thing about summer. What do you like to do during this time? What is summer like where you live?
