$800 billion

Question: Globally, what was women’s total lost income last year due to COVID-19?

Answer: $800 billion

According to the International Labour Organization, the pandemic cost women around the world at least $800 billion in lost income in 2020. This staggering amount is equivalent to more than the combined GDP of 98 countries. In total, women lost more than 64 million jobs last year. This represents a 5% loss, compared to 3.9% loss in jobs for men.

At Women for Women International, our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations program has a large focus on job training. Whether it’s breadmaking or poultry raising, women learn vocational skills that are marketable in their communities so they can start small ventures and begin earning an income.

In the wake of COVID-19, creating jobs for women has never been more inportant.
