Match Her Courage
On November 29, 2018, Women for Women International hosted its 25th Anniversary Benefit. We celebrated all that we have accomplished together in our first 25 years and remembered the strength and vision of our founders, Zainab Salbi and Amjad Atallah. Keynote speaker, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, delved into the critical work of supporting women’s rights and empowerment across the globe.
Ambassador Power expressed that societies where women have an equal say are more likely to build strong democracies and that one of the best predictors of a state’s peacefulness is its level of violence against women. She continued to explain, “… The work of Women for Women is not just a gender issue, a moral issue, or a humanitarian issue. Building a society where women are safe, equal, and thriving is fundamentally an issue of great importance to the cause of peace — a cause that is more urgent now than at any time since Women for Women’s founding.”
The amazing night continued as we honored our sisters from Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Courageous Sister Award: an award that recognizes how our sisters overcome extreme adversity and use the skills they learn in our program to create entirely new lives for themselves.
